Beagle Calorie Calculator: Daily Food Needs

The Beagle standard ends with a weight cap: under 20 lb for the 13-inch variety, 20 to 30 lb for the taller one. Almost no pet Beagle at a US clinic weighs in under those numbers. The scale usually reads 26, 30, sometimes 34.
That gap is the whole calorie question. A 30 lb Beagle at a 1.6 activity factor needs 793 kcal a day. The same dog at 25 lb, same lifestyle, needs 692. A hundred calories is a cup of most adult kibble, and for this breed it is the difference between a hound that hunts an hour a day and one that naps beside the couch.
The Standard Already Names the Goal Weight
Most breed standards describe a range and leave you guessing where inside it your dog belongs. The Beagle standard puts a ceiling on each half instead: 13 inches and under stays under 20 lb, over 13 inches up to 15 lands between 20 and 30.
Read that as a target, not trivia. A 25 lb Beagle from the taller variety has five pounds of room. A 22 lb Beagle from the 13-inch variety is already two pounds over the cap, and two pounds on a 22 lb dog is 9 percent of body weight. That is a body condition score of 7, not a dog that could stand to lose a little.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 13 lb (5.9 kg) | 264 | 370 | 423 | 264 | 1.11 |
| 15 lb (6.8 kg) | 294 | 412 | 471 | 294 | 1.24 |
| 18 lb (8.2 kg) | 338 | 473 | 540 | 338 | 1.42 |
| 20 lb (9.1 kg) โ 13-inch cap | 365 | 512 | 585 | 365 | 1.54 |
| 22 lb (10.0 kg) | 393 | 550 | 628 | 393 | 1.65 |
| 25 lb (11.3 kg) | 432 | 605 | 692 | 432 | 1.82 |
| 28 lb (12.7 kg) | 470 | 659 | 753 | 470 | 1.98 |
| 30 lb (13.6 kg) โ 15-inch cap | 495 | 694 | 793 | 495 | 2.09 |

The 1.0 column is not a diet for a dog at its standard weight. It is what you feed a dog five pounds over, calculated on the weight it should be. A 30 lb Beagle heading for 25 eats the 25 lb row: 432 kcal, not 495. That switch is the largest correction most owners will make all year.
A Scent Hound's Factor Runs High, and That Is the Trap
A Beagle was built to follow a rabbit line for hours at a trot, nose down, through wet cover. That dog earns 1.6 without an argument and 1.8 in a hunting kennel through late fall. The breed's reputation for restless energy is not marketing.
The trap is applying the reputation to a dog that spends its day in a fenced yard. A Beagle let out three times to patrol the same forty feet of grass stands with its nose in a shrub and burns close to nothing. That dog is a 1.4, often 1.2 once neutered.
Count trotting, not minutes outdoors. Half an hour on a leash at a human walking pace is a 1.4 day. Ninety minutes of off-leash sniffing where the dog actually moves is 1.6.
| Factor and what it assumes | Daily kcal (25 lb, RER 432) | Cups at 380 kcal/cup | Gap from previous row |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0ร weight-loss plan at goal weight | 432 | 1.14 | |
| 1.2ร senior, neutered, short walks | 519 | 1.37 | +87 |
| 1.4ร housedog with a daily walk | 605 | 1.59 | +86 |
| 1.6ร an hour of real trotting or off-leash work | 692 | 1.82 | +87 |
| 1.8ร hunting kennel, cold weather | 778 | 2.05 | +86 |
| 2.0ร field trial or full-day scent work | 865 | 2.28 | +87 |
Every rung on that ladder is about 87 kcal, one quarter cup of kibble. Pick 1.8 for a dog that lives at 1.4 and you have added 173 calories a day, half a cup, without changing anything visible about the routine. This is how a Beagle reaches 34 lb on a diet the owner swears is normal.
Eighty-Seven Calories a Day Is Nine Pounds a Year
Eighty-seven calories vanishes into one biscuit. Over a year it is 31,755. Divide by roughly 3,500 kcal per pound of body fat and you get 9 lb on a 25 lb dog.
The same arithmetic works in reverse. A 30 lb Beagle whose standard weight is 25 goes from 793 kcal at 1.6 down to 432 at 1.0 on the goal weight, a cut of 361. Do not take it in one step. Ten percent every three weeks gets there in four moves: 713, 642, 578, 520, then hold near 470 while the dog keeps losing. At 1 to 2 percent of body weight a week, which is four to eight ounces on a 25 lb dog, five pounds takes somewhere between ten and twenty weeks.
Three Beagle Problems That Look Like a Portion Problem
Hypothyroidism turns up in Beagles more often than in the general dog population. The signs are the ones owners blame on the food: weight gain without a bigger appetite, a coat going dry, less interest in the evening walk. A single low total T4 does not diagnose it. Illness, some drugs and plain obesity all push total T4 down, so confirmation means a free T4 by equilibrium dialysis paired with a TSH. One number is not a diagnosis.
Idiopathic epilepsy is the other breed-associated diagnosis, and phenobarbital is usually the first drug. It raises appetite. It also sedates, which drops the activity factor while the dog starts asking for more food. The dose is milligram per kilogram, so a dog that gains three pounds is now underdosed, and the check is a serum level rather than the scale. Ask for the level before assuming the seizures are worsening.
A long, low back is the third. Intervertebral disc disease sits on the Beagle's problem list, and every pound rides on that spine. A 25 lb dog carrying five extra pounds is asking 20 percent more of the structure that was already the weak point. Surgical decompression typically runs $3,000 to $6,000 per episode, which is a strange price to pay for a habit of sharing sandwiches.
What to Change This Week
Weigh one cup of the food in grams. Adult kibble runs about 3.2 to 4.2 kcal per gram, so a cup that weighs 95 g is somewhere between 304 and 399 kcal. That 95-calorie spread is nearly a quarter of a 25 lb Beagle's daily target, and it is invisible on the label if the bag only prints kcal/kg.
With the real number in hand, 692 kcal becomes a volume: 1.82 cups at 380 kcal per cup, or 2.28 at 304. Split in two, that is 0.91 cup against 1.14, which is how a lean hound becomes a barrel with legs.
Set the treat budget first. Ten percent of 692 is 69 kcal. A medium biscuit is about 40, so one and a half biscuits is the entire day's allowance. A Beagle will work just as hard for single kibbles pulled from the cup you already weighed, and the arithmetic stays closed.
Then fix the measurement habit. A 25 lb Beagle weighed in someone's arms carries one to two pounds of noise, which is 4 to 8 percent of the animal. Use a baby scale, or the clinic's scale once a month, and write it down. Body condition is the better weekly check: ribs under a flat palm, a waist behind the rib cage, both hip points findable without pressing.
Get Your Beagle's Daily Target
Enter the weight and pick the activity level that matches the life the dog actually lives. The calculator returns resting energy, maintenance kcal, and the cups and grams that figure converts to.
Try the Dog Calorie Calculator โThree things stop being portion questions. A Beagle that keeps gaining on a weighed ration. One that is ravenous and losing instead. One that yelps when you lift it or drags a hind leg after a jump off the sofa. Those are exams, and the second one especially belongs to the thyroid conversation above.
Everything else comes down to a scoop and a scale, both of which you already own. Start from the standard weight for the variety rather than the weight on the scale, because the dog you are feeding toward has that ceiling written down: under 20 lb, or under 30.
