Bulldog Calorie Calculator: Daily Food Needs

A 50 lb English Bulldog burns about 728 kcal at rest. At the multiplier most of this breed actually earns, that lands near 950 kcal a day, which is 2.7 cups of a 350 kcal food. The bag in your kitchen almost certainly prints something between 1,200 and 1,500 for a 50 lb dog.
Nobody is lying. The chart was written for a dog with more leg. The number that closes the gap is the multiplier, and here it sits lower than almost anywhere else.
The Number You Type In Is the Weak Link
The AKC standard gives mature males about 50 lb and mature females about 40. The same standard calls the dog medium size and low-slung, and 50 lb is a fair target for a healthy male pet.
Here is the part that catches people. The 0.75 exponent flattens the curve hard. The whole width of this breed, 40 lb to 70 lb, only moves resting energy from 615 to 936 kcal. Get the weight wrong by 10 lb and the target shifts about 90 kcal, less than a third of a cup. The formula is forgiving of a bad input, which is exactly why a bad input survives for years. Nothing in the arithmetic argues back.
The Arithmetic on a 50 lb Dog
50 lb is 22.7 kg. Raise it to the 0.75 power and you get 10.4. Multiply by 70 and resting energy is 728 kcal. At 1.3 the daily target is 946 kcal, which the Dog Calorie Calculator returns in one step.
Check the label for the food's own figure. Adult kibble runs roughly 300 to 450 kcal per cup depending on fat content. At 350, 946 kcal is 2.7 cups. At 400 it is 2.4. At 300 it is 3.2. Same target, an 0.8-cup swing, all decided by which bag you bought.
| Body weight | RER (kcal) | Loss 1.0ร | Quiet 1.2ร | Typical 1.3ร | Active 1.4ร | Cups at 350 (1.3ร) | kcal/lb at 1.3ร |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40 lb (18.1 kg) female, standard | 615 | 615 | 738 | 800 | 861 | 2.3 | 20.0 |
| 45 lb (20.4 kg) | 672 | 672 | 806 | 874 | 941 | 2.5 | 19.4 |
| 50 lb (22.7 kg) male, standard | 728 | 728 | 874 | 946 | 1,019 | 2.7 | 18.9 |
| 55 lb (24.9 kg) big male | 781 | 781 | 937 | 1,015 | 1,093 | 2.9 | 18.5 |
| 60 lb (27.2 kg) above standard | 834 | 834 | 1,001 | 1,084 | 1,168 | 3.1 | 18.1 |
| 65 lb (29.5 kg) heavy pet | 886 | 886 | 1,063 | 1,152 | 1,240 | 3.3 | 17.7 |
| 70 lb (31.8 kg) obese | 936 | 936 | 1,123 | 1,217 | 1,310 | 3.5 | 17.4 |
That last column is why the ration looks small. At 18 to 20 kcal per pound, a dog this heavy eats like a 40 lb dog. Compare breeds in the Breed Calorie Calculator.
Where the Factor Sits for This Breed
Published maintenance factors run from 1.2 for a neutered couch dog to 1.6 for a dog getting an hour of genuine exercise. Bulldogs live in the bottom third of that range, and the reason is structural rather than lazy.
Short muzzle, narrow airway, and very little ability to dump heat through panting. A Bulldog's sustainable day is two 20-minute walks in cool weather. In August in Houston it is ten minutes at dawn, and no owner should push past that. The dog is not choosing the sofa. The airway is.
| What the dog actually does | Factor | kcal/day at 50 lb | Cups at 350 kcal/cup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight-loss plan, fed at the 50 lb target | 1.0ร | 728 | 2.1 |
| Senior, 8+, short walks, long naps | 1.2ร | 874 | 2.5 |
| Typical pet, two 20-minute walks | 1.3ร | 946 | 2.7 |
| Lean dog, an hour a day, cool climate | 1.4ร | 1,019 | 2.9 |
| Agility or carting competitor | 1.5ร | 1,091 | 3.1 |
| Hour of hard exercise, rare in this breed | 1.6ร | 1,165 | 3.3 |
Under a year the multiplier runs 2.0 to 3.0 on a growth diet, and that figure belongs to your vet and the puppy's projected adult weight. Feeding a young Bulldog an adult ration at an adult level is the mistake that shows up later as a bad stifle.
A Body Built to Hide the Answer
Body condition scoring asks for a waist behind the ribs. This breed does not have one. The standard calls for a low-slung body, a chest as wide as the hips, loose skin at the neck, and a dipping topline. Three of the nine landmarks are invisible on this dog.
Lay a flat palm on the chest behind the shoulder. At ideal weight the ribs feel like the back of your hand: firm, slightly ridged, easy to find. Knuckles means too thin. The fleshy pad at the base of your thumb means there is a layer in the way.
Then run a thumb down the spine. A Bulldog at 5 of 9 lets you find the last two ribs and both hip points under light pressure, and you cannot see any of them. The neck folds and the dewlap are bred in, and they stay after weight loss, so never use them as a gauge. The fat you are hunting sits behind the shoulder blades and over the loin, exactly where the folds cover it.
The Stifle Is Where the Bill Lands
Bulldogs sit on the predisposed list for cranial cruciate ligament rupture, next to Labs, Rottweilers and Newfoundlands. The ligament fails when the shin slides forward under load, and every pound of body weight is load.
Half of dogs that rupture one knee rupture the other within a year or two. A TPLO repair runs $3,000 to $6,000 per knee, then eight to twelve weeks of strict rest and no stairs. For a Bulldog in July, that recovery is its own problem.
Five pounds off a 55 lb dog is 9 percent of body weight, and it is the difference between a dog that handles the porch steps at nine and one that needs a ramp. The Pet BMI & Ideal Weight Calculator will give you a target weight and a body condition score to aim at.
When the Bowl Has to Change
Bulldogs are overrepresented for both atopic dermatitis and food allergy, and a fair number end up on hydrolyzed or novel-protein diets. Those foods are not calorie-equivalent to what the dog was eating. Hydrolyzed formulas often run 320 to 360 kcal per cup, so a 946 kcal target becomes 2.8 cups instead of 2.7, and the swap stays invisible unless you read the new label.
A short muzzle and a fast swallow send air down with the kibble, so smaller meals in a wide shallow bowl help more than a protein swap.

Try the Dog Calorie Calculator โWhat to Change This Week
Weigh one cup of kibble in grams. Two cups by volume can be 30 to 40 g apart between brands, and on a 946 kcal ration that is a third of a meal, every day.
Treats get 10 percent, which on this dog is 95 kcal. One level tablespoon of peanut butter is 95. That is the entire budget, not a snack inside it. A medium biscuit is about 40, a dental chew 60 to 80, a quarter cup of kibble 88. Pick one and skip the rest.
Expect slow. A safe rate is 1 to 2 percent of body weight a week, and 1 lb a week would need a 500 kcal daily deficit, which is more than half this dog's food. Bulldogs lose at a quarter to a half pound a week on a 125 to 250 kcal deficit, so six pounds is four to six months of work. Feed twice a day, weigh every two weeks on the same scale, and cut the portion 10 percent at a time with three weeks between changes.
Three things stop being calculator questions. A dog that vomits after most meals. A dog losing weight on a ration that should hold it. A dog that will not finish a walk it managed last month. Those are exams. Everything else is a number in a bowl you can change tonight.
Enter the target weight rather than the current one, and pick the factor for an average Tuesday rather than your best week. Then weigh the food. The formula was never the hard part.
