Chocolate Toxicity in mg/kg: The Number Vets Actually Use

"How much chocolate is too much?" is the wrong question for a dog. The Formula in Plain English

Reading the Chocolate Label the Right Way

The label almost never prints "mg theobromine per ounce." It prints "percent cacao" and a net weight in grams. To get the number you need, two conversions must happen in your head. First, percent cacao roughly tracks theobromine concentration: a 70% cacao bar is far more concentrated than a 30% cacao bar, with white chocolate near 0%. Second, you have to translate percent into mg/g using a published theobromine concentration table, then multiply by the grams of product eaten. Standard reference values are around 1.5 mg/g for milk chocolate, 6 mg/g for semi-sweet, 7-10 mg/g for dark chocolate, and 15-25 mg/g for unsweetened baking chocolate and cocoa powder.

Around ~20-40 mg/kg, mild clinical signs appear โ€” vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, increased thirst. Around ~40-60 mg/kg, severe effects begin: cardiac arrhythmias, muscle tremors, agitation, elevated body temperature.
