Why "Seems Fine Now" Is Not the All-Clear

The most dangerous myth about chocolate poisoning is that a calm, normal-looking dog a few hours after ingestion is out of danger. Because absorption is gradual and clearance is slow, the worst signs can be many hours away. A 30 lb dog that ate a moderate amount of dark chocolate may be bouncing around happily at hour four and tremoring by hour ten. The stimulant does not "peak and crash" the way caffeine does in a person; it rises slowly and then sits in the system for the better part of a day.

  • Activated charcoal binds theobromine still sitting in the gut, reducing how much more gets absorbed. It is most useful early and can be repeated because gut transit is slow.
