Is Dark Chocolate Worse for Dogs? Theobromine by Chocolate Type

Yes โ€” and the gap is much wider than most owners assume. When a veterinary team asks "what kind of chocolate was it?", they are not making conversation. That single answer can move the same physical amount of chocolate from a harmless nibble to a life-threatening dose. The reason comes down to one ingredient that varies enormously between products: cocoa solids, and the theobromine locked inside them.

Quick answer: Ounce for ounce, dark chocolate carries roughly five times the theobromine of milk chocolate, and unsweetened baking chocolate carries about ten times. White chocolate has almost none. What "% Cacao" Actually Tells You

Theobromine is a methylxanthine produced by the cacao bean. It lives in the non-fat cocoa solids โ€” the dark, bitter component โ€” and essentially not at all in cocoa butter, sugar, or milk. So the percentage printed on a chocolate bar is a surprisingly good proxy for canine risk. A 70% bar means 70% of its mass comes from cacao-derived ingredients; the rest is sugar and additions. A milk chocolate bar might be 10-15% cocoa solids, with the rest sugar, milk powder, and cocoa butter.

This is why "dark chocolate" is not one thing. A 55% semi-sweet bar and a 90% single-origin bar are different animals from a toxicology standpoint, and the calculator treats them differently. Dogs also cannot clear theobromine efficiently: its half-life in dogs is roughly 17.5 hours against about 7 hours in humans, so the compound accumulates while the animal's body slowly works through it.

Brand and bean origin shift these numbers somewhat, but the ordering never changes: the darker and more bitter the product, the denser the theobromine.

One Ounce, One 30 lb Dog

Concentration only becomes meaningful once you divide it by a dog. Hold the amount and the animal constant โ€” one ounce eaten by a 30 lb (13.6 kg) dog โ€” and watch the type do all the work:

Where White Chocolate Fits

White chocolate contains cocoa butter but virtually no cocoa solids, so its theobromine content is trivially small. A dog would need to eat an implausible quantity to reach a toxic methylxanthine dose. That does not make it a treat: white chocolate is close to pure fat and sugar, and a large fatty ingestion can trigger vomiting, diarrhea, or pancreatitis, which is its own emergency in predisposed breeds like Miniature Schnauzers. The risk is real; it is simply a different mechanism.

Products That Hide More Cocoa Than You Think

The dangerous cases in practice are rarely a milk chocolate bar. They are the concentrated, unglamorous items sitting in a pantry:

  • Cocoa powder. The single most concentrated common household source. One tablespoon (~0.2 oz) holds roughly 150 mg of theobromine.
  • Cacao nibs and "raw cacao" health products. Marketed as wholesome, these are essentially crushed cocoa solids and sit in the same range as baking chocolate.
  • Chocolate-covered espresso beans. A double stimulant load โ€” dark chocolate plus a meaningful caffeine dose from the bean itself.
  • Cocoa bean shell mulch. Garden mulch made from cocoa hulls has been reported to contain anywhere from about 50 to 850 mg of theobromine per ounce, and dogs are attracted to the smell. Treat any suspected mulch ingestion as a real exposure.
  • Baking supplies and brownie batter. An unbaked tray combines high cocoa density with an easy access height and, if the recipe is a sugar-free version, a possible xylitol problem on top.

Caffeine: The Second Stimulant

Chocolate contains caffeine as well as theobromine, and caffeine follows the same cocoa gradient. Milk chocolate holds roughly 6 mg of caffeine per ounce, dark chocolate and baking chocolate around 23 mg per ounce, and cocoa powder about 65 mg per ounce. Caffeine is a stronger stimulant on a per-milligram basis but is present in much smaller quantities, so theobromine remains the primary driver of clinical signs.
