How the Puppy Weight Predictor Works

We use multiple veterinary methods and average them for the most reliable estimate:

๐Ÿ“ Method 1: Growth Rate

Adult weight = (Current weight รท Age in weeks) ร— 52. Simple but less accurate for large breeds that grow for 18+ months.

๐Ÿ“ Method 2: Breed Formula

Uses breed-specific multipliers. Small breeds reach 50% of adult weight at ~12 weeks, large breeds at ~18 weeks.

๐Ÿ“Š Method 3: Doubling

Small breeds: double weight at 16 weeks. Medium: 2.5ร— at 14 weeks. Large: double at 6 months.

๐ŸŽฏ Method 4: Parent Average

If both parents' weights are known, the average is a strong predictor โ€” especially for purebreds.

Best time to use: 6-24 weeks for small/medium breeds; 4-8 months for large/giant breeds. Predictions are most accurate when you know the parents' sizes and the puppy's breed background.

Frequently Asked Questions

For purebred puppies with known parents, accuracy is typically within 10-15% of adult weight. For mixed breeds, the estimate is rougher but still useful for planning. The calculator is most accurate when used between 8-16 weeks for small/medium breeds and 12-24 weeks for large/giant breeds.

Small breeds reach adult size by 9-12 months. Medium breeds: 12-15 months. Large breeds: 15-18 months. Giant breeds may continue growing until 18-24 months. Note that dogs may "fill out" (gain muscle and body mass) even after height growth stops.
